Methylsulfonylmethane is a mouth full, I think I took longer to try and pronounce it right, than to start writing this piece. (I still don’t think I pronounce it right).

What is MSM?

MSM is a naturally occurring organosulfer (organic compound that contains sulfur) chemical compound found in all plant, animal, and human life.  The main function that MSM is thought to have , is supplying sulfur to make other chemicals in the body, in order for the body to function properly. Trace amounts of MSM can be found in Fruit, Corn, Tomatoes, Coffee, and Tea, and even Milk.


What Does MSM help with in the body?

In one study, 22 healthy women received 3 grams of MSM or a placebo per day for three weeks leading up to a half marathon. The MSM group reported less muscle soreness and joint pain than the placebo group. (StudyA)

In another study, 18 men showed that taking 50 mg of MSM powder per kg of body weight for 10 days significantly reduced exercise-induced muscle damage and increased antioxidant activity following an 8 mile run.

  • Could Relieve Allergies

In a study, 50 people were given 2600mg of MSM per day for 30 days. On the 7th day, upper and total respiratory symptoms were reduced, and lower respiratory symptoms were improved significantly. (StudyC)

Inflammation, as we know is everywhere. Wrinkles are not immune to inflammation, in fact, wrinkles are a form OF inflammation. MSM, has been known to be a great anti-inflammatory agent. As it also contains sulfur, this sulfur contributes to keratin (skin, hair, nails, protein), and the keratin proteins are strengthened. (Also, this contributes to why burnt hair smells so bad….it’s the sulfur you’re smelling).

Like too much of anything good, can also be bad, MSM is no different. MSM is basically sulfur based, and having too much sulfur can cause complications, However, if you stick with recommended dosing, there is nothing to worry about. And of coarse, we recommend consulting with your doctor before adding anything into your daily regiment.
